Westminster - Year 1 2023 - 2024

Ms Sarah Pearson

Welcome to Westminster Class; the home of Year 1!

Our topic this term will be Dungeons and Dragons.  We are excited to be exploring the wonderful world of fairytales, castles and royalty.  Our learning will even include a visit to Chirk Castle.

As writers we will be exploring fairytales old and new, and learning more about narrative, characters and settings.

As mathematicians we will begin to learn about multiplication and division, as well as applying our number knowledge to solve mathematical problems.  We will also learn about capacity, time and money.

As historians we will be learning about the lives and impact of our three great queens; Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.

As geographers we will discover more about the four countries that make up the United Kingdom; their locations, capital cities and famous landmarks.

As scientists we will be identifying and grouping different animals, as well as learning more about our amazing bodies and senses.  We will also work scientifically to find the best material for the princess to make her mattress from as we wouldn't want her to feel the pea and miss out on her beauty sleep.

As theologians we will explore other world faiths and compare the different ways in which we welcome babies into the world, as well as enjoying and comparing our different creation stories.

As designers and builders we will design, build, test and evaluate bridges to help us reach the castle, as well as using a range of materials to create castles of our own.

As artists we will explore modelling and sculpture, and use clay to create models of famous royal figures.

As musicians we will explore timbre and texture to create magiacl musicscapes of our own.

It's going to be an exciting term of learning!

Ms Pearson will be teaching Year 1 Tuesday -Friday and Mrs Birtwistle will be teaching Year 1 on Mondays.

Westminster Reading

Children's books will be changed on a Monday when they have finished reading their current books. Each child can choose up to 4 books to take home at one time and they will be given a phonetically decodable book by their teacher.  The decodeable book should be read multiple times to help develop fluency and expression. If, over the course of the week, your child reads all 5 books, their reading should be supplemented with books from home. For some children reading longer books, the expectation isn't to read all 5 books and should change just those which have been completed.

Reading Records will be monitored regularly and they remain a very good way to communicate messages from home.

Westminster PE Sessions

This term PE will be on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.  Please ensure that your child comes to school in their Saighton P.E. kits on these days.

Outdoor learning

This term our outdoor learning session will be on a Wednesday afternoon.

Please ensure children bring in appropriate clothing and footwear to change into for their session.

Home Learning

Each week we hope that the children are enjoying a variety of books and stories at home with their families.

In addition each Friday your child will come home with a simple spelling activity which will involve practising writing some 'harder to read and spell' words with your child.  Please do assist them in this activity as it will support their progress in both reading and writing.

Also on a Friday, the sounds the children have been practising in phonics will be detailed in their reading journals.   Please take time to look at these with your child.

Thank you all for your continued support.
