Our Furry and Feathered Friends

Here at Saighton we have a school dog called Tilly, who visits with Mrs Smith every Tuesday and Thursday.  Tilly is an 8 year old Cocker Spaniel and pupils are designated as dog walkers.

Several years ago we welcomed rescued battery hens, Elizabeth, Henrietta and Blossom to Saighton, which was a pilot school for a special project with CEFAW - the Christian Ethics of Farmed Animal Welfare - which is headed up by Professor David Clough, Chair in Theology and Applied Sciences at the Univeristy of Aberdeen.  Professor David introduced us to the idea of 'creaturely flourishing' and we were immediately intrigued as this links so well with our own school vision of 'Flourishing together.  Life in all its fullness' (John 10:10).  Unfortunately the rescued hens have now all passed away but they spent the last months of their life being cared for by the school and its staff and pupils.

We now have two brown layer hens called Camilla and Catherine and very recently we took in five Bantam hens from St Helen's Animal College and they have come to spend their retirement at Saighton.  There is one mother hen and 4 of her daughters.

Pupils are designated as 'Hen Pals' and are responsible for the daily care of our rescue hens.
