Religious Education

At Saighton we place great value on our teaching and learning in Religious Education (RE).  As a voluntary aided school, the governing body controls the religious education curriculum which must be according to the rites, practices and principles of the Church of England.

We believe that Religious Education provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self and the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. Religious Education encourages pupils to learn from different religions, beliefs, values and traditions while exploring their own beliefs and questions of meaning.

Saighton Church of England Primary School and Pre-School are proud to have achieved the REQM (Religious Education Quality Mark) Gold Award in recognition of our outstanding teaching of Religious Education.

Effective RE has the potential to have a powerful and lasting effect on the child’s heart and mind. It is a subject that combines academic rigour with the development of the character and spirit of the child. RE provides opportunities for spiritual development and personal reflection.

We believe that our teaching of RE contributes significantly to the way we live out our Christian vision and ethos, and that quality RE helps breaks down barriers and builds communities. Our approach is in line with The Church of England’s Statement of Entitlement for RE, which advocates a balanced RE curriculum involving theology, philosophy and social sciences.

At Saighton Church of England School we use the Questful RE scheme, created by the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education. On a quest to discover more about religion and world views, pupils will discover more about themselves. As RE develops children’s knowledge and understanding of the nature of religion and belief, it provokes challenging questions about meaning and purpose, truth and values, identity and belonging.
